Finding natural hair care products that work can be a challenge. I’ve shared my natural hair spray recipe and my beach waves sea salt spray before. I like both of them but wondered if I could combine them to make one everyday hair product.

Turns out, combining these two recipes is not only possible but awesome.

Sugar and Spice Texturizing Spray

I have baby-fine hair and even though it’s naturally wavy, it doesn’t hold style well. My hair is also long and blonde, so it easily gets weighed down and looks dirty if I put certain hair products in it.

I wanted some hair styling products that would offer a light hold and give my hair some wave. I also wanted something that nourishes without parabens, parfum (fragrance), sulfates, and copolymer found in many finishing sprays. The result was these beachy waves spray and homemade hair spray. They helped give my hair some body without making my hair feel greasy or weighing it down.

As a busy mom, I like to keep things simple though. This texturizing hair spray combines the texturizing ability of my original sea spray with the extra hold of my homemade hair spray. The result is a long-lasting texturizing spray that’s great for thin hair, straight hair, curly hair, and everything in between. (It is what I used to style my hair for this picture)

I also added essential oils to this recipe for scent and to stimulate hair growth. I spend a lot of time outside in the summer, and these oils help protect hair and encourage new hair growth.

Natural Texturizing Spray

This spray is inexpensive and simple to make and it’s worked better on my hair than any store-bought dry texture spray I’ve ever tried. It doesn’t make hair look greasy or hard, yet it controls frizz and locks in hydration.

Even if you buy a top of the line glass spray bottle to use (which can be reused many times) and use all the optional ingredients, this recipe still costs much less than a 4-ounce bottle of Bumble and Bumble Surf Volume Spray. It’s one of the few conventional products I’ve ever really liked.

I’ve gotten a lot of questions about the glass spray bottle I used for this recipe. I originally used a fine mist 8-ounce spray bottle. I also recently tried this glass spray bottle and like it better since it can spray a fine mist or a thicker spray. Another option is to reuse a glass apple cider vinegar bottle and just replace the top with a regular spray bottle top.

How to Use the Texturizing Spray for Styling

Spray the texturizing spray into dry hair and scrunch until the spray dries. You can also blow dry on low as you scrunch to speed up the process. For extra volume, use a curling iron to loosely curl 1-inch sections of hair and scrunch again.

For easy morning hair, braid dry hair into a French braid (or French braid pigtails) at night and spray with this spray. In the morning, use dry shampoo if needed and unbraid hair. Re-spray and scrunch for all-day texture and waves.

Why Use Essential Oils?

They’re completely optional, but the essential oils add a nice scent and some hair benefits. Unlike some carrier oils, essential oils are volatile oils that don’t add a greasy feel to hair.

Rosemary – Stimulates circulation in the scalp for better hair growth. Targets hair follicles to block the hormone DHT that leads to hair loss.

Lavender – Helps hair grow thicker and faster according to a 2016 animal study.

Lemon – Adds a bright, fresh scent and stimulates circulation for healthier hair.

Clary sage – Reduces skin inflammation and regulates oil production. Also increases circulation for a healthier scalp
