Preview for Swansea v Man City
Pep Guardiola insists Manchester City will have “incredible focus” for tomorrow night’s trip to Swansea in the last 16 of the EFL Cup, although he will make wholesale changes to his side.
City have won the trophy four times under Guardiola and the Catalan says that success rate is down to giving teams from lower down the pyramid maximum respect.
He said: “I have played 10 seasons here and I’ve played many times with Carabao, FA Cups.
“Teams from lower divisions we have always taken seriously otherwise we wouldn’t have had the success we have had in the past so we prepare the same way. Incredible focus, sometimes even more. We have a responsibility to make the players know it’s important.”
With City having to juggle the Premier League, Champions League and EFL Cup, it is inevitable they will rotate their squad for the trip to South Wales.
Erling Haaland will be rested, particularly after colliding with a post late in the 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa on Sunday, while the likes of Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol and Gianluigi Donnarumma are also unlikely to play.
Donnarumma’s absence will give an opportunity to back-up James Trafford.
“The keeper is a special situation because the keepers play normally one and the second one doesn’t play. All I can say is that we are delighted [with him],” said Guardiola of the former Burnley stopper. “His behaviour in training [is great]. They all have to be ready in case we need them in the Premier League and Champions League and of course we have an incredible keeper.”
Swansea are 13th in the Championship following the weekend win over Norwich.
