A suspected assassin’s preliminary hearing has been delayed over concerns about his jail conditions while awaiting trial. Vance Boelter, 57, of Green Isle, Minnesota, faces federal charges of murder and stalking for allegedly killing a prominent Minnesota Democratic Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, and attempting to kill another lawmaker and his wife.
Boelter appeared in court wearing a green anti-suicide smock, accompanied by a U.S. Marshal. His attorney, Manvir Atwal of the federal public defender’s office, told Magistrate Judge John Docherty that poor detention conditions, including sleep deprivation from suicide watch, have made it difficult to communicate with her client.
