If you want to get Stephen A. Smith in the mood, do not mention Tim Tebow.
More than a dozen years after Tebow’s Broncos beat the Steelers in the truly wild 2012 AFC Wild Card Round, Smith is still reeling from the trauma.
On Monday, Smith rejoined his old First Take co-host Skip Bayless on The Skip Bayless Show, where the host recounted the fateful moment on the evening of January 8, 2012 where, on the first play of overtime, Tebow threw an 80-yard touchdown that clinched the Broncos’ victory.

Smith described the aftermath as “one of the most awful feelings I had in my career.”
“I’ve been single all my life and had a very, very beautiful, sexy woman in my life at that time,” Smith told Bayless. “And I was having a really, really, really good time most evenings with her. I would always make sure there was a little action going on. And Tim Tebow threw that damn touchdown to Demaryius Thomas… Literally, I collapsed on the floor and I laid there for over two hours. I didn’t move, I was so damn depressed.”
“After I finally got up from that living room floor, I couldn’t eat, couldn’t have sex, couldn’t do nothing,” Smith continued.
Adding to Smith’s pain was the fact that Bayless, his co-host at the time, was one of Tebow’s most enthusiastic cheerleaders. Which led Smith to spend “a legitimate two to three hours trying to conspire to come up with a way that I wouldn’t have to come into work the next morning,” he admitted. “Maybe I can get a flat tire. I don’t want to get into a vicious car accident, but if I’m not going at a high speed, I could show the picture of the car and delay going into the office.”
Eventually, Smith relented and went into the office. He described the day as “without question, the worst day of my First Take career.” Bayless, for his part, was clearly amused.
The interview marks the first time Smith and Bayless have appeared together on television since Bayless left ESPN in 2016. The two co-hosted First Take together from 2012 to 2016.
