Shep Rose of Southern Charm fame is getting plenty of reactions ranging from netizens in praise to netizens scolding an ad of his wherein he urged viewers to put their phones away for some loving family interaction. The video features a loud declaration by Shep: I pinky promise to put down my phone and engage with my kids, even though everyone is tired and hungry. The only catch – Shep has no kids.

In the US Cellular-sponsored video, Shep repeats the pledge to set a good example for kids in how they use their phones. The post was captioned with a hashtag that declared it an ad, lame irony notwithstanding. One wrote plainly, Jesus, I like this guy, but he doesn’t have any kids?!?! Another one said, Wait? Shep…. Do you have kids?
Not every voice was out to bash Shep. Some felt the message was good regardless of the fact that Shep really isn’t a dad. This one said, This is a great post for anyone with/without kids! Thanks Shep! Awww..you would be a great dad! Another one goes, Best advice everyone is addicted to their phones and it literally ruins the present moment.
The jabbers, however, did not shy away from joking. One said, My dog will actually bat the phone right out of my hand! What does that tell ya! Another snarked, The best parents don’t have kids.
Shep’s post stirred up a number of inquiries into his private and professional affairs. Several followers promptly took the opportunity to ask if Southern Charm had returned, one writing: When is Southern Charm returning? Did you start filming yet?
Shep, if nothing else, has been under the asterisk of being scattered for decades; famous on the show for his lack of commitment, this recent chapter of public drama in his life with jewelry designer Taylor Ann Green has amplified speculation as to whether he has truly grown up or not.
What confounded many was that Shep’s message about phone usage really hit on a local and very real issue. There are so many caught in that struggle between screen time and face time. One insightful commenter even went so far as to recommend a relevant book, Present Over Perfect is a great book, just FYI!
The mixed reactions lay bare the dilemmas celebrities face in endorsing products or dispensing advice. They appreciate the crop of adjectives from some fans, while others put that question mark on a star’s sincerity when it does not sit well with his/her known lifestyle.

The comments, however, never grabbed Shep’s attention yet. Will it be a new path to embark on, or just another quirk in an already quirky persona? I guess all of us will get to find out, but for now, it has gotten everyone’s eyes googling in one direction, maybe questioning their own usages of the phone.
