ESPN analyst Rex Ryan is sure he’ll be the next head coach for the New York Jets. If they hire him, he claims Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers won’t do whatever he wants.
Per ESPN’s Rich Cimini, Ryan is scheduled to interview for the Jets head-coaching opening on Tuesday. In a Monday interview with ESPN New York Radio, Ryan skewered Rodgers.
“Clearly, when you have a guy that doesn’t show up for mandatory mini-camp — and, by the way, he’s your quarterback coming off an [Achilles] injury — I think that’s an absolutely ridiculous message you send to the team,” Ryan told the “DiPietro & Rothenberg Show” (h/t Cimini).
“If he comes back, things would be different. If he’s back, it ain’t gonna be the country club, show up whenever the hell you want to show up. That ain’t gonna happen. I’ll just leave it at that,” Ryan said.
This past offseason, Rodgers skipped mandatory mini-camp to vacation in Egypt. Then Jets-HC Robert Saleh said it was an unexcused absence but disregarded it.
Rodgers, 41, has not clarified whether he will retire this offseason. After a 32-20 win over the Miami Dolphins in Week 18, the four-time MVP remained noncommittal about his future.
“I just need some time away to think about my future in the game and my future here, if they want me to be part of the next phase or if they’re ready to move on,” Rodgers told the media. “Either way, I’m thankful for my two years here.”
Even if Rodgers returns — which seems unlikely — Ryan still shouldn’t be the Jets’ top candidate.
Ryan previously served as Jets HC from 2009-14, going 46-50 and leading the club to two AFC Championship Games. He was Buffalo Bills HC from 2015-16 but went 15-16 before they fired him.
The Jets (5-12) should enter rebuilding mode after missing the playoffs for a 14th consecutive season. However, Ryan doesn’t seem like their guy, considering he hasn’t coached in eight years.
