Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced that the United States will start revoking visas for some Chinese students. China ranks as the second-largest source country for international students in the U.S. During the 2023-2024 academic year, over 270,000 students from China were studying in the United States. “Under President Trump’s leadership, the U.S. State Department will work with the Department of Homeland Security to aggressively revoke visas for Chinese students, including those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields,” Secretary Rubio wrote. LiveNOW’s Andrew Craft is getting the details from Jay Greene, a Senior Research Fellow in The Heritage Foundation’s Center for Education Policy.
With more than 1.1 million international students enrolled in the US last year—many of whom pay full tuition—university leaders are sounding the alarm about potential fallout. The new visa crackdown comes just days after the Trump administration attempted to block Harvard University from enrolling new international students. This decision was temporarily halted by a federal judge.
