From Arsenal to Doncaster Rovers, points do not always win prizes when it comes to the teams who topped the tables on games played in 2024.
The Premier League top two over the calendar year, Arsenal and Liverpool, both missed out on the title, while only two of the teams to finish as the top two points-wise across the EFL divisions won promotion.
At the other end of the scale, Everton, Wolves, Luton Town and Plymouth Argyle, who have started and ended the year without a manager after Wayne Rooney left the club on New Year’s Eve, are among those to have averaged less than a point a game.

Premier League teams with most points in 2024
Liverpool finished nine points behind Manchester City and seven behind Arsenal in May, but Arne Slot’s blistering start to life with the Premier League leaders at the end of 2024 has put them between last season’s top two for the year.
The Gunners lost the fewest games of any team in the top four divisions in England (3) and joined the Reds in winning the most Premier League matches (26), one ahead of City.
All six of City’s defeats have arrived during the final two months of the year, but they remain one of five other teams in all the division to have lost fewer than 12 times, alongside Liverpool (4), Chelsea (7), Fulham (11) and Newcastle (11).
More than 20% of Wolves’ points in 2024 have arrived in the final nine days of the year under new manager Vitor Pereira, while half of Everton’s points have come since September 21, with the other half arriving in April and May after they started the year with a 10-match winless run.

Which EFL teams won the most points in 2024?
After finishing third in the 2023/24 Championship and topping the second tier at the end of 2024, Leeds United have won the most points of any team in elite English football – six more than next-nearest rivals Wrexham, who won promotion from League Two and ended the year second in League One.
Third-tier high-flyers Wycombe Wanderers are the other team to have won more points than Arsenal or Liverpool, and the Whites (7), Chairboys (8) and Red Dragons (9) join West Bromwich Albion, Doncaster Rovers and Stockport County (all 10) as the clubs to have lost fewer than 11 games while being in the EFL throughout the year.
Unsurprisingly, Leeds (29), Wrexham (27) and Wycombe (25) won the most times, with Doncaster and Walsall both victorious at least twice more than any other team by each triumphing on 24 occasions.

Relegated from the Premier League and 19th in the Championship at the end of 2024, Luton earned the fourth-fewest points of any club to have an entire year of fixtures.
Burton Albion and Bristol Rovers each lost 26 matches, but Carlisle United – relegated from League One and second-bottom of League Two at the end of the year – outdid them both by being beaten 29 times.
In a respectable start to their first ever EFL season, Bromley have earned as many points for the year in half as many games as Carlisle, while fellow promoted side and play-off hopefuls Chesterfield have taken three more points than the Cumbrians in 21 fewer matches.
Carlisle’s win over Accrington in their final game of the year, however, put them level with Everton and Rotherham United on the second-fewest victories, with eight. Burton conceded an 88th-minute equaliser at Huddersfield Town in their closing fixture of 2024, ensuring that they retained the lowest total of seven wins.
