Leading NFT marketplace OpenSea has deepened its stance in the Web3 gaming ecosystem by inking a new partnership. The project recently onboarded the 20-year-old avid gamer Mongraal as its first gaming ambassador, which has piqued the interest of many within the blockchain gaming community.

Mongraal, legally known as Kyle Jackson, came to the limelight in 2019 after qualifying for the Fortnite World Cup at the age of 14. Since then, he has garnered attention from his consistent Twitch streams, which currently have 7.2 million followers.

A divergence into the non-fungible realm began in 2023 after Yuga Labs, the firm behind the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT collection, launched a survival game called Dookey Dash: Unclogged. Users were mandated to own a Sewer Pass NFT to partake in the gaming experience. The skill-based gameplay allowed players to compete for rewards, including a one-of-one Golden Key. Mongraal won the Golden Key, which he sold about two months later for 1,000 ETH, worth about $1.6 million at the time.

Upon joining OpenSea as its first gaming ambassador, the professional gamer revealed in a blog post that he used the NFT marketplace throughout his days with Dookey Dash. Highlighting why he preferred Web3 gaming to its Web2 counterpart, Mongraal wrote:

“In web2, you can sink thousands of hours and dollars into a game, but if your account gets banned or the game shuts down, you lose everything. With blockchain, players actually own their in-game assets. That transparency and security could change everything.”

Mongraal added that his partnership with OpenSea will enable him to “help educate” more gamers about the Web3 gaming space and enable them to “understand how these games play and function.”

Although OpenSea just forged its first ambassadorship, it is not new to the gaming verse. Last month, on-chain data revealed that NFTs on the game-centric Ethereum layer-2 Ronin Network saw massive sales volume of $5.4 million. Among the NFTs that topped the charts are Ronin Monke and Axie Infinity. In other news, the game publisher Ubisoft launched a game-focused NFT collection dubbed Warlords on OpenSea. Within a short period, these pixelated characters garnered sales worth $4.5 million, indicating massive interest.
