An active shooter and police officer were killed on Friday afternoon during a gun battle at an Emory Point CVS near the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Emory University campus, authorities said.
While the active threat has passed, law enforcement officials are going building-by-building to clear people out and make sure no one else was injured.
Shots broke the normal Friday afternoon route along Clifton Road. Alert, confusion, and fear followed.
Those shots were being fired inside the CVS store located at 1600 Clifton Road, across the street from the main entrance to the main campus to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Authorities said gunfire struck multiple CDC buildings.
The CDC, Emory University, and Emory University Hospital were quickly placed on lockdown, as did some nearby smaller schools and daycares.
Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said officers from multiple agencies rushed to the scene and found the shooter on the second floor of the CVS building.
