In the first game since Super Bowl LIX, the Los Angeles Chargers defeated the Detroit Lions 34-7 in the NFL Hall of Fame Game to kick off the 2025 preseason.
The Lions’ miscues were the difference in this one, as Detroit turned the ball over five times. On top of that, they were penalized eight times for 68 yards.
Offensively, these teams were fairly even. The Chargers gained 261 yards while the Lions had 197 yards. However, mistakes once again cost Detroit, which was a combined three for 15 (20%) on third and fourth downs in this game. Meanwhile, LA was six for 15 (40%) in those situations.
It was a less-than-ideal start for the Lions, who fumbled the opening kickoff, setting the Chargers up with possession at Detroit’s 28 yard line. Six plays later, Los Angeles tight end Will Dissly caught a five-yard touchdown pass on a fourth down to give the Bolts an early 7-0 lead.
Mental errors derailed the Lions’ first few drives. A holding penalty forced a three-and-out on their first possession. Then, quarterback Kyle Allen threw interceptions on back-to-back drives, the first of which was returned 60 yards to Detroit’s six yard line. That led to a touchdown two plays later, putting Los Angeles ahead 14-0.
Chargers fans got a look at first-round draft pick Omarion Hampton, who only carried the ball twice for nine yards. Also, rookie wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith, who made an easy 28-yard catch on LA’s second drive of the contest, finished the night with two receptions for 43 yards and a touchdown.
The Lions finally got on the board in the second quarter, thanks in part to running back Craig Reynolds, who accounted for 34 of the Lions’ 60 yards on their fourth drive of the game. He also scampered into the end zone on a three-yard touchdown run to cut LA’s lead to 14-7.
Former number three overall pick and Chargers backup quarterback Trey Lance had a great outing as LA’s starter. He went 13 for 20 passing with 120 yards and two touchdowns. The second TD gave the Bolts a 21-7 advantage.
Detroit’s mistakes carried over to the second half when they muffed their first punt return of the third quarter, giving LA possession of the football on the Lions’ five yard line. The defense held firm, though, only giving up a field goal, making it a 24-7 game. The Chargers would pick up another field goal on the following drive to go ahead 27-7.
Detroit’s third-year quarterback, Hendon Hooker, replaced Kyle Allen in the second half. However, he didn’t do much better than Allen, going three for six with 18 passing yards, nine rushing yards, and an interception.
The scoring was capped off by Chargers running back Kimani Vidal, who reached the end zone from two yards out for his second touchdown of the night. He finished the game with nine carries for 37 yards and two TDs.
Both of these squads will be off for at least a week. On August 8th, Detroit will face the Atlanta Falcons on the road. Two days later, the Chargers will host the New Orleans Saints.
