US President Donald Trump on Friday announced that Washington and Beijing had reached an agreement on TikTok, adding that he would meet Chinese President Xi Jinping at the APEC Summit in South Korea later in October and visit China “early next year.”
The announcement came after the two leaders spoke by phone, their first conversation in months. Trump described the call as “very productive,” noting that discussions touched on trade, fentanyl trafficking, efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war, and final approval of the TikTok deal. He further confirmed that Xi would travel to the United States “at an appropriate time.”
“The call was a very good one,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, stressing that the two sides would continue speaking in the weeks ahead.

According to a US official, the conversation began at 8 am Eastern time (1200 GMT) and covered trade matters as well, foreign media reported.

This marked Trump’s second call with Xi since returning to the White House, where his administration has imposed steep tariffs on Chinese goods, triggering retaliatory measures and raising tensions between the world’s two largest economies. Despite this, Trump has signalled openness to striking trade arrangements, particularly in relation to TikTok.
TikTok ownership talks move forward
Trump, who has credited TikTok with bolstering his political reach, has repeatedly extended the deadline for the platform to be spun off from its Chinese parent, ByteDance. The move is required under a law passed last year to address national security and data privacy concerns.
Trump said Thursday that TikTok “has tremendous value” and the US “has that value in its hand because we’re the ones that have to approve it.”

Beyond TikTok: trade, Ukraine and fentanyl
Trump said the conversation also yielded progress on “many very important issues including Trade, Fentanyl, the need to bring the War between Russia and Ukraine to an end,” besides TikTok. A statement released by Beijing said Xi emphasised the significance of US-China ties and urged Washington to refrain from imposing additional trade restrictions.
“Both sides need to work hard and in the same direction, so as to realise mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation,” the Chinese statement said.
Trump, speaking separately on Thursday, said his relationship with China was “very good,” but argued that Russia’s war in Ukraine could be curtailed if European countries increased tariffs on China. He did not specify whether he planned new tariffs on Beijing over its purchase of Russian oil, a step he has already taken against India.
