“No two words in the English language more harmful than: ‘Good job.'” Sony Classics has announced an official re-release of the 2014 hit film Whiplash, directed by Damien Chazelle. This was the big film that launched his career! I was there back at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival when this premiered and took the festival by storm. Everyone was talking about it non-stop! It won the Audience Award! Then it went on to become a big hit at the box office and it even won some Oscars (J.K. Simmons got one!) and then Damien Chazelle went on to make La La Land next and the rest is history. “A masterpiece returns to theaters for its 10th Anniversary.” A promising young drummer enrolls at a cut-throat music conservatory on the East Coast where his dreams of real greatness are mentored by a ruthless instructor who will stop at nothing to realize a student’s potential. Whiplash stars Miles Teller as Andrew and J.K Simmons as Fletcher, with Paul Reiser, Melissa Benoist, Austin Stowell, Nate Lang, and Chris Mulkey. This film absolutely rules! So intense and iconic! And that grand finale drum solo still totally rocks. This one definitely holds up.
Here’s the new 10th Anniversary trailer (+ poster) for Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash, on SPC’s YouTube:
Andrew Neiman is an ambitious young jazz drummer, single-minded in his pursuit to rise to the top of his elite music conservatory. Plagued by the failed writing career of his father, Andrew hungers day & night to become one of the greats. Terence Fletcher, an instructor equally known for his teaching talents as for his terrifying methods, leads the top jazz ensemble in the school. Fletcher discovers Andrew and transfers the aspiring drummer into his band, forever changing the young man’s life. Andrew’s passion to achieve perfection quickly spirals into obsession, as his ruthless teacher continues to push him to the brink of both his ability—and his sanity. Whiplash is written & directed by American filmmaker Damien Chazelle, his second feature film at the time after making his debut with Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench (2009), just before going on to direct La La Land (2016). Produced by Jason Blum, Helen Estabrook, David Lancaster, Michel Litvak. This initially premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival as an Opening Night film. It went on to earn $49 million at the box office and won three Academy Awards including Best Sound Mixing. Sony Classics will re-release Whiplash in theaters nationwide on September 20th, 2024 this fall. Who’s down?
