I’ve been practicing making my own makeup for years, exploring everything from DIY concealers and highlighters to lip balms and mascaras. While I have a powder blush that I adore, many people have asked me for a cream blush option. So, after perfecting a liquid foundation recipe, I decided to work on creating a creamy formula for blush as well.
You can tailor this cream blush to match your skin tone for a customizable tint. If you have warmer undertones, you can add a bit more cocoa powder or warmer-toned pigments. While I’ve provided instructions for the pigment amounts I prefer, feel free to adjust them to suit your personal preferences.
Cream Blush
Many commercial cream blushes contain ingredients like dimethicone, silica, red 6, and other components that I’m not enthusiastic about. While some companies now offer non-toxic alternatives, it’s often more cost-effective to create your homemade version!
Cream blush offers better staying power and can be more vivid and versatile than powder blush. A little goes a long way. I also use a small amount to deepen my natural foundation if needed during the summer months.
The finish of your blush can vary from matte to dewy depending on the ingredients used. Cocoa powder helps give the blush a warmer tone, while mica adds color and a subtle shimmer.
Ingredients For the Best Blush
For this recipe, you have two options. One involves using a pre-made lotion as the base, while the other requires creating a DIY liquid base.
If you prefer a simpler version, utilize a natural pre-made lotion as the base and add colors and pigments as desired.
However, if you choose the DIY base, be prepared for a bit more effort and five ingredients, but this method allows for more customization as you are crafting the lotion yourself.
For those making their own blush base, you’ll need shea butter, aloe vera gel, and emulsifying wax. Beeswax won’t work here because we need the emulsifying wax to blend the water and oil-soluble ingredients. These basic ingredients are similar to those used in my liquid foundation recipe.
Aloe vera is hydrating, while shea butter is nourishing for dry skin. You can also incorporate a little vitamin E oil for antioxidants and to extend the shelf life. While fresh aloe vera is fantastic, it has a short shelf life in DIY skincare products. Therefore, using a pre-made and naturally preserved aloe vera gel is the best option here.
Customize Your Cream Blush Color
This DIY blush starts with either cocoa powder or natural mineral makeup as the colorant. You can then enhance it with mica powder for added pigment. I personally combined a deep berry shade with a bright pink. You can even experiment with adding a touch of bronze or mauve mica for a more intricate color palette.
Begin with a small amount and gradually increase until you reach your desired color. While I’ve specified the quantities I used in the recipe below, feel free to adjust based on your preferences. The more pigment you add, the richer and more intense the color will be.
It’s challenging to find a powdered blush without titanium dioxide, which can be harmful when inhaled as a powder. However, once mixed into a foundation or cream blush, it doesn’t seem to pose the same toxicity risks. If you don’t have a powdered blush you like, opt for the cocoa powder and mica option instead. Plant-based pigments such as ground beetroot can result in a gritty product that lacks color payoff.
How to Apply It
I typically use a blush brush to apply this cream blush, but you can also use your fingers. Simply dab a bit on your cheekbones and blend it upwards towards your temples in gentle circular motions. The exact placement may vary depending on your face shape and complexion.
If you have very dry skin, consider moisturizing or applying a primer before using this cream blush. I find that the shea butter provides a creamy and moisturizing feel that works well over foundation.

If making the simple version, mix the organic lotion with 1-2 teaspoons of mineral powder (or mica powder and cocoa powder) until you achieve the desired color and consistency.
For the complete DIY version: Melt the shea butter and emulsifying wax in a double boiler until fully melted.
Add the aloe vera gradually, whisking until smooth and fully incorporated.
Turn off the heat and slowly add the colors. Add mica and cocoa powder incrementally until you reach the desired color.
Test the color and coverage on your cheek or the back of your hand by dipping the tip of a spoon into the mixture and letting it cool for a few seconds.
Spoon the mixture into your desired container and allow it to cool.
Instead of mica and cocoa powder, you can use 1-2 teaspoons of all-natural mineral powder. Opt for a powdered natural mineral blush in your preferred shade.

When adding colors (mica powders and cocoa powder) to a pre-made lotion, you’ll create a very smooth blush or bronzer. Experiment with the colors until you achieve your desired shade. Keep in mind that it may appear darker during the mixing process than it will on the skin.
Incorporating more vegetable wax in the homemade lotion base will result in a thicker and longer-lasting blush or bronzer. Adding more aloe will create a smoother and more subtle blend.
Reddish mica powders will give a rosy or pink hue akin to a blush, while cocoa powder or bronze mica will produce a bronzer or a tan mixture.
