NASA is considering using a nuclear bomb to intercept an asteroid approaching the Moon’s orbit. The asteroid, named 2024 YR4 and discovered in December 2024, has quickly become the focus of the international space community. Scientists are exploring how to neutralize this potential space threat, and some proposals include a nuclear intervention plan reminiscent of science fiction films.
When it was first discovered, the probability of 2024 YR4 hitting Earth on December 22, 2032, was over one percent. With a diameter between 53–67 meters, the asteroid could have caused devastation similar to the 1908 Tunguska event if it had impacted. Recent observations have shown that a collision with Earth is unlikely, but there is still a risk of it hitting the lunar surface in 2032.
Scientists emphasize that the probability of a lunar impact is four percent, and while this may seem low, the resulting debris clouds could damage satellites in low Earth orbit. To reduce the impact risk to zero, three methods are being considered. The first is further exploration, the second is orbital deflection, and the last is complete destruction.
The Nuclear Option is on the Table

According to a new study, theoretical missions could be launched at different times in the future. The amount of planning and resources required for 2024 YR4 is stated to be greater than that of the DART mission, which successfully altered an asteroid’s orbit in the past. Scientists say that a DART-like deflection mission for 2024 YR4 was considered, but this method is deemed insufficient due to uncertainties in the asteroid’s size and mass.
In contrast, the proposal to destroy the asteroid with nuclear explosive devices is being seriously examined. Researchers are planning to send two nuclear devices, each with a 100-kiloton yield. These bombs would be five to eight times more powerful than those dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War II. The use of two devices is a precaution in case the first one fails or does not reach the target. While the earliest possible launch window for the nuclear option is projected to be between 2029–2031, it is noted that the plans could change significantly in the coming years.
