Michael Rooker’s turn as Yondu in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies brought an unexpected emotional core to what could have easily been a purely comic-book side character. “He may have been your father, boy, but he wasn’t your daddy.” Come on, try not to tear up at least a little. Ironically, Rooker almost had to pass on the role altogether, as the first Guardians film conflicted with his schedule on The Walking Dead. Fortunately (for Marvel fans, at least), his character Merle Dixon was killed off, freeing him up to accept the part that would go on to become one of the MCU’s most heartfelt performances.

Rooker Had to Turn Down the Role At First

“[Gunn] wanted me to do the role. He wrote it with me in mind. We were planning on it,” Rooker told Brandon Davis. “Then we realized, oh no – The Walking Dead and Guardians of the Galaxy are filming at the same time. [Guardians] is in London, [The Walking Dead] is in south Atlanta. It’s not gonna happen.“

That was that, but Rooker was still in contact with James Gunn about a “small role” he could play in the movie instead of Yondu. However, he soon got a call from a producer of The Walking Dead, who informed him that his character was being killed off, which turned out to be a blessing. “A minute later, I get called [by] an AMC producer. ‘Oh no, they’re killing me off? Absolutely, I won’t tell a soul,” he said. “That’s just the way it is.’… If they hadn’t killed me off when they decided to kill me off, I wouldn’t have been able to do Yondu.“

Rooker returned as Yondu in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and came back for a quick cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as well. At this point, it’s hard to imagine anyone else having played the role, and if Merle hadn’t been killed off, we would have had to deal with that very real possibility. Could anyone else have sold “I’m Mary Poppins, y’all!” with such enthusiasm? I don’t think so. We thank you for your sacrifice, Merle Dixon.
