Metaverse and NFTs Remain Popular Choices for Hardware Companies as Coin Media Reports

Despite appearances, it seems that the metaverse and NFT sectors are still capturing the attention of the largest companies in the world by market cap. Companies like Apple, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Nvidia are all working on developing new devices for the metaverse. The latest news involves a partnership between Microsoft and Samsung to produce OLED panels for a new line of mixed reality headsets. This collaboration is just beginning, with mass production not expected to start until 2026.

The Microsoft-Samsung headset is expected to compete with Apple’s Vision Pro headphones and will focus on viewing video and gaming content on a flat screen rather than immersing users in the metaverse. Microsoft has been working towards integrating its applications with the Meta Quest headset for some time, signaling potential competition in the mixed reality space with these upcoming devices.

While Microsoft is gearing up for future products, other tech giants are already making strides in the metaverse sector. Apple introduced its Vision Pro AR/VR headset in June 2023, marking its entry into augmented reality and the metaverse market. Google, on the other hand, strengthened its partnership with Magic Leap in June 2024 to enhance immersive experiences and promote the AR/XR ecosystem. Magic Leap’s head-mounted AR display, the Magic Leap One, overlays computer-generated 3D images onto real-world objects.

As for Meta, previously known as Facebook, the company’s transition to focus solely on the metaverse has not been as successful as expected. The recent Q2 2024 report revealed an additional loss of $4.5 billion in the Reality Labs sector, bringing the total loss over the years to nearly $60 billion. However, there is a glimmer of hope as Zuckerberg explores new revenue streams through Artificial Intelligence models, showing positive results in the latest financial quarter.
