Meta researchers have developed a wristband that enables computer control through hand gestures. This innovative device is specifically aimed at assisting people with disabilities.

Over the years, various methods for controlling and interacting with computers have emerged, including keyboards, mice, and touchscreens. However, for researchers, these aren’t enough. They are continuously taking new steps to elevate human-computer interaction to the next level. Meta’s developing technology is one such advancement.

Meta researchers announced they have developed a brand-new method for controlling computers. This technology, developed with the contribution of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), will allow devices to integrate with us, enabling a more “human” way of controlling computers. The research findings were published in Nature.

Wristband for Computer Control with Hand Gestures Under Development

The new technology developed by researchers is essentially a wristband. This wristband is designed to control computers through hand gestures, aiming to replace devices like keyboards and mice. By using the wristband and your movements, you can perform various functions such as moving the cursor, writing as if using a pen, and opening applications.

According to the company, this wristband utilizes a technique called surface electromyography (sEMG), which can detect electrical signals produced by muscle activity to interpret user movements. These signals allow the device to perceive a person’s intended actions even before they fully perform them.

The primary goal of the wristband is to facilitate computer interaction for individuals with motor disabilities. In a way, it shares a similar objective with Elon Musk’s Neuralink, which aims to create a brain-computer interface by implanting chips into the human brain. However, here the problem is solved directly with a wristband rather than a chip. Researchers plan to conduct tests on individuals with spinal cord injuries. The technology could provide them with the ability to use computers by interpreting their movements, even if they cannot fully use their arms or hands.

What other applications do you think this gesture-controlled wristband could have beyond assisting people with disabilities?
