Embarking on a vacation is undeniably thrilling, with the allure of exploring foreign territories and immersing oneself in new cultures. However, this excitement is often tempered by the practical challenges of getting to and from airports, particularly for those residing a considerable distance from these transportation hubs. Opting for a rideshare can dent your budget significantly, leaving you to consider driving yourself. Yet, the thought of navigating the complex, often baffling world of airport parking can dampen your enthusiasm.

A prime example of such a challenging scenario is found at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), notorious for its congested and confusing parking system. Fear not, for this guide aims to demystify LAX airport parking, offering insights into the various parking options, reservation tips, and strategies to economize on parking fees.

Parking Fees at LAX Airport

Parking at LAX presents a spectrum of rates, influenced by the choice of parking spot. LAX-managed parking options span an array from the more economical $13 daily rate to a steep $75 per day. This variance caters to different traveler needs and budgets.

Authorized Parking at LAX

LAX caters to diverse parking needs by offering a variety of authorized parking solutions. One noteworthy feature is the availability of electric vehicle parking across all parking garages, with the exception of garage seven. The differing costs of parking at an official LAX lot are as follows:

Terminal Parking: $9 for the first hour, with a maximum daily rate of $60. A prebooking option starts from $56 per day.

Economy Parking: $8 for the first hour and a maximum daily rate of $35, with a prebooking rate beginning at $15 per day.

Valet Terminal: A flat daily rate of $75, with a prebooking start from $32 per day.

Budget Parking: $5 hourly rate, with a daily maximum of $20. Prebooking rates start from $13 per day.

EV Terminal: A service fee of $2 plus 45 cents per kilowatt-hour.

To secure a parking slot at an official LAX lot, it is advisable to make a reservation beforehand. This not only assures you of a parking spot upon your arrival but also offers the opportunity to economize. Reservations can be made through the LAX website.

Short- and Long-term Parking at LAX

LAX is accommodating of both short- and long-term parking across all its lots. For extended stays, the budget parking lot is a cost-effective choice, offering a prebooking rate of $13 per day inclusive of a complimentary shuttle service. Another viable option for long-term parking is the economy lot, slightly more proximate than the budget lot and prebookable at $15 per day, also including a shuttle service.

In situations where you do not require a full day’s parking, such as when picking up arriving passengers, consider coordinating your arrival with theirs to use the cellphone lot or drive up to the curb for a quick pick-up.

🤓Nerdy Tip

For quick terminal access, the garages directly across from each terminal offer 15 minutes of free parking. This is a convenient option for those picking up passengers, avoiding the need to navigate airport traffic or circle the premises.

In the event you prefer parking over other options, terminal garages situated at every terminal charge $9 per hour, with an additional $7 for every subsequent 30 minutes. Beyond LAX’s in-house parking provisions, the surrounding vicinity brims with alternative parking solutions. Numerous hotels and independent parking lots offer competitive rates, enhancing your parking choices.

Hotel Parking with Shuttle Service

A practical option to consider is hotel parking, such as at the Hilton Los Angeles Airport, which offers indoor parking from $12.95 per day along with a complimentary shuttle to LAX. This can provide a seamless transition to and from the airport.

🤓Nerdy Tip

Ensure the hotel you choose offers shuttle service aligning with your departure and arrival timings, as some establishments may not provide this service during off-peak hours.

Hotel parking can serve an additional purpose if you have an early flight or return late. You can directly head for an overnight stay at the hotel with the shuttle, proving more advantageous than parking in a separate lot and then relocating your car to the hotel, which essentially means you pay twice for parking.

Utilizing a FlyAway Bus Stop

To circumvent the bustling traffic near the airport, one might consider parking off-site and using the FlyAway bus service to commute to and from the airport. The Van Nuys FlyAway stop, situated 24 miles from LAX, charges a maximum day rate of $6 for parking. Another FlyAway location is at Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, where parking costs $8 per day. Remember, utilizing the FlyAway bus entails an additional fee of $9.75 each way for the shuttle service.

Leveraging Specialized Search Engines

Confronted with a plethora of parking lots near LAX, the task of selecting the most suitable one can seem daunting. This is where parking lot aggregators like SpotHero come to the rescue, simplifying the search by consolidating pricing and availability information from multiple parking lots into a single, accessible platform. These sites not only reveal the costs but also provide insights into the parking situation, customer reviews, operating hours, entry and exit privileges, and the availability of airport shuttles.

Economizing on LAX Parking

The prospect of paying for parking is seldom appealing; however, there are strategies to mitigate these costs at LAX.

Utilizing a Travel Credit Card

A strategic approach to maximizing rewards while paying for parking involves the use of travel credit cards. A prime example is the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, which offers a generous $300 annual travel credit that can be applied toward parking fees. This credit is automatically applied to qualifying purchases, including parking, when you use your card for payment.

NerdWallet Rating

NerdWallet’s ratings are determined by our editorial team. The scoring formula takes into account the type of card being reviewed (such as cash back, travel or balance transfer) and the card’s rates, fees, rewards and other features.

Considering Rideshares

Depending on the duration of your absence, opting for a rideshare might present a more cost-effective alternative to parking. It’s worth comparing the cumulative cost of parking—which starts at a minimum of $20 per day if not prebooked—to the convenience and possibly lower expense of using a rideshare service.

Exploring Public Transit Options

Although Los Angeles might not be renowned for its extensive public transportation network, it does offer feasible alternatives for getting to LAX. Utilizing the bus or Metro line is a budget-friendly option, with fares as low as $1.75 for a one-way trip on the Metro, significantly less than the cost of airport parking.
