Letcher County, Kentucky Sheriff Shawn “Mickey” Stines has been arrested on a charge of first-degree murder after investigators said he shot and killed a district judge inside of his courthouse chambers.
The shooting was reported Thursday in Whitesburg, a town of about 1700 people in Letcher County, located about 140 miles southeast of Lexington near the Virginia line.
Kentucky State Police (KSP) said Sheriff Stines shot Judge Kevin Mullins multiple times after an argument inside of the courthouse. Mullins, a judge of 15 years, was pronounced dead and the sheriff was arrested at the scene.
Sheriff Stines is being held in the Leslie County jail rather than in his own county.
KSP has not disclosed the details of the argument but said it will release additional information on Friday.
