Korean drama Doubt and Spanish comedy Celeste were the big winners at the inaugural Italian Global Series Festival‘s Maximo Awards last night.
Held under the stars at an outdoor closing ceremony in Riccione, Italy, the awards brought together shows and stars from around the world following a week of screenings and talks.
MBC drama Doubt, written by Han Ah-Young and starring Han Suk-Kyu, Chae Won-Bin, Han Ye-Ri, Roh Jae-Won, Yoon Kyung-Ho and Oh Yeon-Soo, took home the Best Series – International Competition, Drama award. Han Suk-kyu also won Best Actor in the drama competition.
Movistar Plus+ Spanish comedy thriller Celeste, from Diego San Josè and starring Carmen Machi, Andrea Bayardo, Manolo Solo and Clara Sansa, won Best Series – International Competition, Comedy. Marchi also won Best Actress in the comedy competition.
Ukrainian war drama The Train was awarded Best Series – International Competition, Limited Series.
IGSF is an updated incarnation of the Roma Fiction Fest, which ran annually for ten years until 2016. The Maximos, which IGSF Artistic Director Marco Spagnoli wants to establish as the Italian version of the Emmys, advocate for stronger recognition for the small screen. There have been ten world premieres over the eight-day event, which ended with the closing ceremony.
Other winners in the the drama competition category included a Best Director prize for Lisa Mulcahy for UK drama The Assassin, and a Best Actress award going to British actress Phyllis Logan for The Puzzle Lady.
The Special Jury Award in drama went Hidden Island, which is from showrunner and creator Paco Díaz del Río, and written by Felipe Carmona.
In the comedy competition Jury, Best Director went to Christopher Smith for UK, Ireland and Germany co-pro Video Nasty. Best Actor was handed to Ahmet Kural for Turkey’s Gassal and the comedy Special Jury Award went to UK series Douglas Is Cancelled, which was created, written and executive-produced by Steven Moffat and starring Hugh Bonneville, Karen Gillan, Alex Kingston and Ben Miles.
For the Limited Series Competition, Best Director went Lucy Gaffy for Australian, Canadian and Irish series Mix Tape, with Laure Calamy for French drama The Confidante and Matthew Gurney for UK series Reunion taking home the best Best Actress and Best Actor awards, respectively. The Special Jury Award for Best Ensemble Cast was handed to Kabul,which has partners from France, Germany, Greece, Belgium and Italy and stars Gianmarco Saurino, Valentina Cervi, Shervin Alenabi and Eric Dane; written by Olivier Demangel, Thomas Finkelkraut and Joey Lavy.
The Italian winners of the Maximo SIAE series competition for best screenplays include L’Amica Geniale Season 4, which won Best Drama Script; Hanno Ucciso l’Uomo Ragno – La Leggendaria Storia Degli 883 for Best Comedy Script and Best Comedy Series; Storia Della Mia Famiglia’ for Best Mini Series Script; Questi Fantasmi! for Best TV Movie Screenplay; The Bad Guy Season 2 for Best Drama Series; L’arte della Gioia for Best Mini Series and Il Treno dei Bambini for Best TV Movie.
This year’s festival took place from June 23-28, with some special screenings taking place last weekend in Riccione and Rimini, Italy. The festival hosted a total of 61 series with productions from over 35 countries, including 33 series in the competitive strands, and presented the world premieres of 10 new shows.
It was organized and conceived by the APA (Audiovisual Producers Association) with support from the Ministry of Culture, Cinecittà, the Emilia-Romagna Region and the municipalities of Riccione and Rimini, with the contribution of SIAE, the Italian Society of Authors and Publishers and AGIS, providing the country with an ambitious new benchmark for contemporary television series.
