Listen and subscribe to Stocks In Translation on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you find your favorite podcast. In this episode of Stocks In Translation, Yahoo Finance markets and data editor Jared Blikre and producer Sydnee Fried welcome Kristina Hooper, Invesco’s chief global market strategist, for an in-depth discussion on the markets’ performance following the 2024 presidential election, projections for 2025, and how it all relates to the business cycle.
The business cycle refers to “the economy’s recurring pattern of growth and decline, which occurs in phases,” Blikre explained. “In the expansion or growth phase, we have the peak, the highest point, and the contraction, which is the decline. And then you have the trough, which is the lowest point.”
Hooper predicts that 2025 will be a year of growth, with the economy and stock market expected to reaccelerate. “I think we’ll see small caps and mid caps perform better. Cyclicals perform better because they’re more sensitive to the economic cycle.” Hooper said.
Despite this prediction, Hooper warned that the connection between the business cycle and the performance of different assets is not predictive. “Being in a particular economic cycle phase does not predict exactly how things go,” Hooper said. Twice a week, Stocks In Translation cuts through the market mayhem, noisy numbers, and hyperbole to give you the information you need to make the right trade for your portfolio.
