With qualification out of the question for both sides – Singapore are assured group winners and will travel for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup – it’s a question of just how much promise Khalid Jamil can show in this final qualifier ahead of the start of the next cycle of FIFA World Cup and AFC Asian Cup qualifying. With Jamil sticking to a tried-and-tested (and not very successful) squad, the biggest factor to look forward to for Indian fans is the debut of Australian-turned-Indian Ryan Williams. Currently plying his trade in the Indian Super League with Bengaluru FC, Williams has been a bright spark in the ISL since he arrived, and he should elevate the Indian attack with quality from the wings.

It’ll also be interesting to see if Jamil replicates the free-flowing football that India showcased in the first half of their last home qualifier against Singapore at the Fatorda in Goa, especially given they lost that match.

Hong Kong are going through a period of change too, with head coach Ashley Westwood having left and recently joined ISL side Kerala Blasters and the squad has been revamped almost completely — something many had expected (or wished) Jamil had done with the India squad too.

In fact, the only ‘new’ faces really are Bijoy Varghese and Albino Gomes, while there have been recalls for a host of Mohun Bagan players. Can India finish on a strong note, or will Hong Kong underline just how poor their qualification campaign has turned out? We’ll find out soon.
