Hyundai Motor Group, the South Korea-based automotive giant, is expanding its partnership with U.S. robotics company Boston Dynamics, announcing plans to purchase tens of thousands of robots. This long-term strategic alliance aims to boost Boston Dynamics’ robot manufacturing capacity, supporting Hyundai’s vision for global leadership in robotics.
Mass Production Era Begins for Boston Dynamics

To accelerate its U.S. expansion, Hyundai has unveiled a massive $21 billion investment plan, with $6 billion allocated specifically to innovation and strategic collaborations. These investments will help Hyundai enhance its production infrastructure and fast-track its transition to advanced robotic technologies.
Back in 2021, Hyundai acquired Boston Dynamics from SoftBank for $880 million, laying the foundation for its long-term growth strategy in the robotics sector. Now, this strategy is taking tangible shape with plans to integrate advanced humanoid and support robots like Atlas and Spot into production environments. Specific timelines and procurement details, however, have not yet been disclosed.
Atlas Joins the Production Line
Hyundai already employs Spot, Boston Dynamics’ four-legged robot, in its facilities for industrial inspection and maintenance tasks. The company now plans to deploy the next-generation humanoid robot, Atlas, to its assembly lines.
Hyundai believes physical AI and humanoid robotics will fundamentally transform how work is performed across industries.
Electric Atlas to Be Tested in Hyundai Plants by 2025

The newly revamped electric Atlas robot, introduced by Boston Dynamics in April 2024, will undergo testing at Hyundai’s production facilities in 2025. Compared to its earlier hydraulic predecessor, the new Atlas offers improved strength and enhanced mobility.
Boston Dynamics also plans to expand its robotic hand variants, aiming to boost versatility and usability across a range of industries.
Expanding R&D and Strategic Collaborations
In 2024, Boston Dynamics deepened its R&D efforts through new collaborations with industry leaders such as Nvidia, Google, DeepMind, Toyota Research Institute, and its affiliate Robotics & AI Institute (RAI).
According to Goldman Sachs, the global humanoid robotics market is projected to surpass $38 billion by 2035. The Hyundai–Boston Dynamics partnership stands out as one of the most promising developments in this emerging sector.
