Ahead of President-elect Donald Trump’s return to the White House, disagreements within the Republican party make it difficult for the GOP to elect a speaker of the House. Brown University professor of political science Wendy Schiller joins Madison Mills on Catalysts to discuss what this Republican infighting means for Trump’s second term policy and the national deficit.
Schiller says whether Republican Congress members can find some common ground is “a really important question” for concerns like a government shutdown in March, the national debt ceiling, and Trump’s tax cuts. “These are all things that have to be passed by the House constitutionally,” she says. “The real crux of the issue is so much of the financial infrastructure of the federal government has to originate or pass the House before it can even be touched by the Senate. When you think about that, the stakes are very high.”
