Hamas is calling for a plan to implement a cease-fire with Israel instead of a new round of talks. It follows a deadly Israeli strike on Gaza City that drew international condemnation. The strike was aimed at a Hamas “command and control center” embedded within a school and adjacent mosque, Israel’s military said.
In financial markets, global stocks struggled to hold gains as traders prepared for a week packed with US data that will shed light on the health of the world’s largest economy and the outlook for Federal Reserve interest rates. Europe’s Stoxx 600 index erased a 0.5% advance, while US futures and Asian stocks retreated from their earlier highs.
