TL;DR

Google Wallet now lets you create a digital pass from any text-based document.
The app uses AI to capture the key information from a photo.
The feature is now available to all users in the US.

Android Authority reported last month that we were able to test Google Wallet’s new pass creator feature. First announced at Google I/O in May, it began rolling out last week and is now available to all US app users.

The “Everything else” pass initially had a slow rollout, but 9to5Google confirms the feature has become widely available. The upgrade allows you to create a digital pass from any text-based document and store it in your Google Wallet.

Where you could previously only store passes with a QR or barcode, this innovation uses AI to work out what type of pass you’re creating. Whether successful or not, it’ll store the salient details as a new pass, with the option to view the original photo underneath. The AI will even recognize sensitive information — such as health or government ID details — and classify it as private, with added security measures applied by default.

The expanded utility of the app gives you more scope to leave certain passes at home, such as your car insurance or gym pass. That said, you should check that any place that requires a membership card would accept a digital version.

To add a text-only pass to your Google Wallet, open the app and press Add to Wallet. The menu now features a new Everything else option to select. Take a photo of your card, then follow the prompts to create a digital version.

Google Wallet has introduced a new feature that allows users to create digital passes from text-based documents with the use of artificial intelligence. This innovative functionality has recently become available to all users in the United States, offering a convenient way to store various important documents and information securely within the app.

Initially announced at Google I/O in May, the pass creator feature has been gradually rolling out and is now fully accessible to Google Wallet users in the US. The “Everything else” pass, as it is called, enables users to convert any text-based document into a digital pass that can be stored and accessed easily through the app.

The implementation of AI technology in this feature allows Google Wallet to analyze and extract key information from photos of text-based documents. Previously, users could only store passes with QR or barcode scanning capabilities. However, with this upgrade, the app can now recognize the type of pass being created and capture relevant details automatically. In cases where sensitive information such as health records or government identification details are detected, the AI will classify them as private and apply additional security measures by default to protect the user’s data.

The convenience and versatility of this new feature offer users the flexibility to carry fewer physical documents with them, as important passes like car insurance or gym memberships can now be stored digitally in Google Wallet. It is important to note, however, that some establishments may still require physical membership cards, so users should verify acceptance of digital passes beforehand.

Adding a text-only pass to Google Wallet is a straightforward process. Users simply need to open the app, select the “Add to Wallet” option, and choose the new “Everything else” category. After capturing a photo of the text-based document, the app will guide users through the steps to create a digital version of the pass for easy access and retrieval.

In conclusion, the introduction of the pass creator feature in Google Wallet represents a significant advancement in digital document management and storage. By utilizing AI technology to automate the process of creating digital passes from text-based documents, the app provides users with enhanced convenience, security, and accessibility for their important information. With this latest update, Google Wallet continues to innovate and improve the user experience, setting new standards for digital wallet applications in the market.
