Frank Grillo opened up about starring in Marvel and DC Studios films and revealing the differences between both universes.
Grillo has had the privilege of playing a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the new DC Universe James Gunn and Peter Safran are creating.
The actor played the role of Brock Rumlow “Crossbones” across the MCU and is now voicing the character of Rick Flag Sr. for Max’s animated series Creature Commandos. In a recent interview, Grillo explained the differences between both studios.
“They’re very different,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “Marvel’s a different machine, and it’s great in its own right, but the thing I love about James’ and Peter’s DC is that it’s much more contained. It’s so much more personal and I really enjoy it better. I just love being part of something in the embryonic stage and being able to grow with it and watch it and flourish.”
Grillo first played Brock Rumlow in Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which was released in 2014. He would later reprise his role in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Grillo also voiced the character in its animated version for the Disney+ series What If…? in 2021.
The actor plays Rick Flag Sr. in Creature Commandos and will continue to play him across the DC Universe with appearances on Peacemaker Season 2 and Superman.
“With Creature Commandos and Peacemaker, Flag is a prominent figure in the stories. With Superman, he kind of just drops in,” he told EW.
Grillo also talked about his look for the live-action version of Rick Flag Sr., saying that he shot both Peacemaker and Superman while also shooting Tulsa King, adding, “We were limited to what we could do with my hair. I had to just use what I had and try to make it as interesting as I could. I had every intention of dying it white and slicing it up, but I just couldn’t do it.”
