The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Netflix has greenlit a seven-episode limited series adaptation of the 1952 novel, East of Eden. This classic book was previously brought to the screen in a 1955 movie directed by Elia Kazan and starring James Dean. Now, Elia Kazan’s granddaughter Zoe Kazan is set to adapt the novel for Netflix alongside co-showrunner Jeb Stuart.
Florence Pugh will lead the cast, joined by Christopher Abbott, Mike Faist, and Hoon Lee. The series is being produced by Fifth Season and Anonymous Content, promising a fresh take on a timeless story.
In a statement, Zoe Kazan expressed her excitement for the project, saying, “In the process of bringing this family saga to life, the resonance of my own familial connection to the material has not been lost on me. But it is Steinbeck’s writing — personal, shocking, profound and free — that has kept me enthralled to East of Eden since I first read the book as a young teen.”
Peter Friedlander, the VP of scripted series for Netflix, also shared his enthusiasm for the project, praising Zoe Kazan’s vision and the talented cast and crew assembled for East of Eden.
East of Eden will be a collaboration between Kazan, Stuart, Pugh, and an impressive lineup of directors. Garth Davis will helm the first four episodes, while Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre will take on the remaining three installments.
