Robotics startup Figure AI has recently introduced the brand new Figure 02, the latest iteration of its humanoid robots following the introduction of the Figure 01 model earlier this year. The Figure 02 model boasts significant upgrades, such as enhanced AI systems, improved computer vision with six AI-powered RGB cameras, and a revamped battery pack.
One of the most notable changes in the new model is the addition of a new set of hands. This new iteration features 16 degrees of freedom, surpassing many competitors but still falling short of a real human hand which has 27 degrees of freedom.
Figure AI has also introduced an inference system that processes information three times faster than the previous model, offering 50% more runtime compared to its predecessor. Additionally, the Figure 02 model incorporates AI-powered learning and self-corrections for various tasks.
In a strategic move, Figure AI has partnered with OpenAI to integrate advanced language and visual processing capabilities into their robots. An earlier demonstration of the Figure 01 model showcased real-time conversations and task completion driven by AI. Corey Lynch, Figure’s senior AI engineer, highlighted the robot’s ability to “describe its visual experience, plan future actions, reflect on its memory, and explain its reasoning verbally.” These capabilities have been further enhanced in the Figure 02 model.
Figure AI recently received a valuation of $2.6 billion after securing $675 million in funding from investors such as Microsoft, OpenAI, Nvidia, and Jeff Bezos. OpenAI also supports 1X, another company focused on developing AI-powered humanoid robots for various applications.
1X, a competitor of Figure AI, has introduced its latest offering known as the NEO robot, building on the success of their EVE model. NEO is designed specifically for home assistance, aiming to integrate humanoid robots into everyday domestic life. This differs from Figure’s approach, which focuses on creating a robotic workforce for industrial tasks.
1X reports that EVE has already been deployed in security and potential healthcare roles across Europe and the US, showcasing the practical applications of humanoid robots in various sectors.
Adding to the mix is Tesla’s Optimus, also known as the Tesla Bot, which is capable of performing a wide range of tasks mimicking human actions. The Optimus is equipped with 28 structural actuators and 11 degrees of freedom in its hands, leveraging Tesla’s autopilot cameras and self-driving computer technology for navigation and environment perception.
The demonstration video of the Figure 02 model bears resemblance to Tesla’s Optimus Gen-2 showcase from December 2023, highlighting advancements in dexterity and movement. Nvidia’s suite of AI tools including Nim Microservices, OSMO, and MimicGen play a crucial role in driving progress across the robotics industry.
Upon revealing the Figure 02 model, Figure AI founder Brett Adcock wasted no time in responding to a challenge from Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Twitter. Adcock posted the “Look at me, I’m the captain now” meme from the film Captain Phillips, asserting Figure AI’s position in the robotics space. Despite Musk deleting his tweet later, the playful exchange remains.
The integration of powerful AI with humanoid bodies has sparked both excitement and concerns among observers. While some draw parallels to dystopian science fiction scenarios, others focus on the potential applications of humanoid robots in fields such as space exploration and hazardous industries.
According to Adcock, the robotics industry is poised to have a positive impact on the future.
“These robots can eliminate the need for unsafe and undesirable jobs—ultimately allowing us to live happier, more purposeful lives,” he shared on Figure AI’s official site.
