With the release of macOS Sequoia, Apple implemented a new feature that requires users to regularly approve app access for screen recording. While this was intended to enhance security, it has received mixed reviews from users. Fortunately, there is now a solution available, albeit a third-party one.

Initially, users started receiving permission requests for apps like Zoom during the beta testing phase of macOS 15. These requests were initially weekly but were later changed to monthly prompts after numerous complaints. While the intent behind these prompts is clear, they can still be disruptive, even on a monthly basis. Some users may prefer not to see them at all or only once when using the app for the first time.

MacRumors recently discovered a workaround in the form of an app called Amnesia. Once installed, Amnesia allows users to disable monthly screen recording permission prompts on an app-by-app basis. The software operates on a pay-what-you-want model, enabling users to compensate the developer according to their convenience.

There’s another potential workaround – but will Apple do something itself?

The initial version of Amnesia was designed for macOS 15, but subsequent releases have added support for macOS 15.1 beta. For a complete list of recent updates and changes to Amnesia, users can refer to the app’s changelog.

Alternatively, for more technically inclined users, MacRumors suggests that the same outcome as Amnesia can be achieved using the Terminal app. Tech blogger Jeff Johnson has provided instructions on how to disable screen recording reminders on an app-by-app basis through this workaround.

It would be beneficial if Apple reconsidered the frequency of permission requests. While the company’s priority is enhancing security, users may appreciate the option to switch to quarterly or biannual prompts. Striking a balance between maintaining a safe environment on macOS and reducing user frustration could be a more suitable approach.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, while Apple’s implementation of regular permission prompts for screen recording has raised concerns among some users, solutions like Amnesia provide a way to manage these requests more conveniently. Whether through third-party apps or technical workarounds, users have options to tailor their experience on macOS according to their preferences.

As technology continues to evolve, it’s essential for companies like Apple to respond to user feedback and find a balance between security measures and user experience. By considering alternative approaches to permission requests, Apple can enhance the overall usability of macOS without compromising on security.
