Distinct Possibility Studios, a gaming studio co-founded by EverQuest co-creator John Smedley, has raised $30.5 million in a funding round co-led by BitKraft Ventures and Brevan Howard.
The fundraising also attracted participation from The Tezos Foundation, Hashed, Delphi Ventures, Shima Capital, North Island Ventures, and Decasonic, according to an announcement on Thursday.
The company plans to utilise the capital to develop and launch an AAA-level massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) strategy shooter game, “Reaper Actual”, which is set for release on the Epic Games Store and Steam. In the game, players can engage in “Player vs Player vs Environment scenarios, territorial warfare, resource extraction, and base management” on the island of Marova, according to a company statement.
Smedley is renowned for co-creating the hit video game EverQuest, which players can play on the game’s website or Steam.
“We believe that often in games, the magic happens at the intersection of two genres. We think Distinct Possibility Studios is a great example of this thesis,” Bitkraft Ventures General Partner Carlos Pereira said. “We see that magic happening with their Open-World Persistent Shooter ‘Reaper Actual’, which mixes the MMORPG and FPS genres in a truly unique way.”
Distinct Possibility Studios is building the game on the Tezos-based EVM-compatible layer-2 network, Etherlink. Smedley will draw from his vast experience, having also held roles at Amazon Game Studios and Sony Online Entertainment, whilst also being responsible for co-creating titles like “Planetside 2” and “H1Z1”.
