Ethereum testnet Holesky has achieved finality, an important step amid delays and numerous technical issues ahead of the Pectra upgrade. It’ll be the blockchain’s biggest since 2022’s The Merge.

The milestone was achieved at roughly 3 p.m. ET on March 10, according to data from Etherscan.

The Ethereum community uses these testnets to trial updates before they go live. It’s all to avoid disrupting the main Ethereum blockchain in the process. In this context, “finality” means that all transactions on Holesky are now immutable and irreversible.

Pectra had originally been scheduled to launch sometime in March 2025, bringing numerous anticipated upgrades, but it has since been pushed back to give developers more time amid technical failures during testnet deployments.

The latest development comes after weeks of setbacks. Holesky was first activated more than two weeks ago, on Feb. 24, but suffered from network instability and had yet to achieve finality until now.

Its sister testnet, Sepolia, achieved finality shortly after launch on March 5 but was later hit by issues due to an error with custom deposit contracts, which has been attributed to a cyberattack by the developer team. The issue was fixed several hours later.

The next step in the journey to Pectra, decided in the most recent developer meeting, is what’s known as a “shadow fork,” a temporary copy of the Holesky blockchain that can be discarded once it’s no longer needed. This could give developers more time to iron out any remaining issues with Holesky, without delaying the entire project.

The Ethereum Foundation has yet to announce its new targeted release date for Pectra. Alex Stokes, an Ethereum Foundation researcher, said during a recent developer call: “We need more information about how Holesky goes, how the shadow fork goes, before we can set a concrete date.”

Ethereum’s ETH cryptocurrency has recorded significant declines in recent trading. It’s down 10.0% in the past 24 hours and 52.5% year-on-year, as per CoinGecko data.

What is the Pectra upgrade?

Ethereum’s Pectra update promises numerous updates to the network’s scalability, efficiency, and staking. Pectra will allow users to pay their gas fees with cryptocurrencies other than ETH, including stablecoins—something known as account abstraction.

It will also increase the amount of ETH that users can stake and earn yields on at one time from 32 ETH to 2,048 ETH. Verkle Trees, a new data structure, are also set to be introduced to the network.
