New Yorkers are known for being tough, but it seems they are even tougher to please when it comes to their political leaders. A recent Siena College poll has revealed that Governor Kathy Hochul’s favorability rating has plummeted below that of former President Donald Trump among likely voters in the Empire State.
According to the poll, only 34% of likely New York voters have a favorable opinion of the Democratic governor, compared to 39% for Trump. Hochul’s unfavorability rating has reached a record high of 54%, giving her a net favorability rating of -20%. Trump’s net favorability, on the other hand, stands at -18%.
“To repeat, Kathy Hochul has a lower net favorability rating in New York than Donald Trump,” emphasized Siena poll spokesperson Steve Greenberg.
A significant number of those polled stated that they didn’t have an opinion of Hochul, with 12% falling into this category, compared to only 4% for Trump. Despite Hochul’s efforts such as scrapping congestion pricing, appearing at the Democratic National Convention, and supporting Democrats on the ballot, her numbers have continued to dwindle.
However, the Democrats on the ballot can take solace in the fact that Hochul’s polling struggles have not impacted their own standings.
Vice President Kamala Harris and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand both hold substantial leads over their Republican opponents in New York, as revealed by the Siena survey. 55% of likely voters said they would choose Harris over Trump in a head-to-head matchup.
“New Yorkers trust Harris more than Trump on abortion, democracy, and the economy, and trust them equally on immigration,” Greenberg noted. The poll was conducted starting on Sept. 11, the day following the Trump-Harris debate.
“A plurality of voters indicated that the debate did not sway their vote in November. However, more voters were inclined to support Harris after the debate,” Greenberg added.
While Trump held a slight lead in suburban counties such as Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, Nassau, and Suffolk, Gillibrand was projected to win decisively against her Republican challenger, Mike Sapraicone. 54% of respondents favored Gillibrand, while only 31% supported Sapraicone.
An overwhelming 84% of respondents revealed that they had no opinion of Sapraicone, highlighting the lack of awareness surrounding the former NYPD detective and entrepreneur.
