The electric Porsche Cayenne will have a wired charging peak power of 400 kW and, for an extra fee, will also offer 11 kW wireless charging.

Porsche has announced that its electric Cayenne model will offer a wireless charging feature. The system, called the “Porsche Wireless Charger (PWC)”, has been introduced as the first manufacturer-supported inductive charging solution. The charging pad offers up to 11 kW of charging power and can operate in temperatures ranging from -40 to 50 degrees Celsius. It is unaffected by debris like leaves or snow and operates with an efficiency of approximately 90%.

According to the German brand, the system is quite practical to use. As the vehicle approaches the pad, guide lines are projected onto the digital display along with a front camera view. The driver uses these lines to position the vehicle correctly. Then, the Cayenne’s air suspension lowers the body by a few centimeters, and the magnetic field activates, beginning the energy transfer to the battery.

The charging pad, which is 60 mm high and weighs 50 kg, operates completely independently and does not require a wall-mounted charging unit. The wireless charging system will initially be offered as an option in Europe. Models equipped with this system will come with the necessary wiring for a 15 kg water-cooled receiver unit installed behind the front protective covering. The price for this integrated system has been announced as £2,000 in the UK. An additional £3,000 is required for the charging pad itself.

Safety features are also integrated into the system. For example, if a neighbor’s cat approaches the heat emitted by the platform, the foreign object detection system automatically shuts off the magnetic field. When the animal moves away, the charging process resumes.

The PWC is also equipped with LTE and wireless LAN modules. Through the “My Porsche” app, charging can be started and stopped, scheduled for low-tariff hours, and features like pre-heating can be used.

Wireless charging is, of course, not the only option for charging the new Cayenne. The model will be launched with approximately 400 kW of wired charging power and a power output of around 1,000 horsepower in its top-tier Turbo version.
