Dick Van Dyke revealed that he was working on a project with his friend Ed Asner that never came to fruition. Just before Asner’s death in 2021, the two stars planned to remake the classic comedy The Odd Couple.
Van Dyke, 99, spilled the news during a Q&A with fans at a Dick & Arlene Van Dyke Present Vandy Camp event in Malibu, CA, People magazine reported. “That would’ve been such fun, and we lost it,” Van Dyke said of the planned project. “I’ve lost a lot of friends.”
The Mary Poppins actor added that despite outliving almost all of his peers, he is grateful for his long life and career. “Life’s been good to me. I can’t complain,” he said.
The original 1970 Odd Couple TV series, which starred Jack Klugman and Tony Randall as unlikely roommates Oscar and Felix, was developed by Garry Marshall and ran for five seasons on ABC. The series was based on Neil Simon’s 1965 play of the same name. In 2015, an Odd Couple reboot aired on CBS for three seasons, starring Matthew Perry and Thomas Lennon.
As for the project that never came to be, Van Dyke and Asner’s Odd Couple team-up would have been a dream come true for classic TV fans. Not only were they longtime friends, but both actors had special ties to the late Mary Tyler Moore. The actress played Van Dyke’s wife on The Dick Van Dyke Show, and she later played newsroom employee, Mary Richards, on The Mary Tyler Moore Show opposite Asner’s Lou Grant.
In 2016, Moore’s two “leading men” posed for a photo together at AARP’s 15th Annual Movies for Grownups Awards, per Closer Weekly.
Asner died in 2021 of natural causes. He was 91. Van Dyke is eyeing his 100th birthday on December 13, 2025.
