If you’re planning to travel anytime in the near future and are planning to check a bag, there’s a good chance you could be paying significantly more money than you previously planned.
As oil prices and jet fuel prices remain high as a result of the continued conflict in the Middle East, several major airlines have resorted to raising their fees on checked baggage, including Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and JetBlue.
Here’s how the prices have raised for each of those three airlines.
Delta Air Lines
This week, Delta announced that it would be raising its checked baggage fees for most passengers on domestic and short-haul international routes.
Beginning on Wednesday, the carrier began charging $10 more for their first and second checked bags, and $50 more to check a third, bringing the fees to $45 for the first bag, $55 for the second and $200 for the third, according to Delta.
“These updates are part of Delta’s ongoing review of pricing across its business and reflect the impact of evolving global conditions and industry dynamics,” the carrier said in a statement via PBS.
The change marks Delta’s first increase in checked baggage fees on domestic routes in two years. Fees for long-haul international flights are not affected.
United Airlines
United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby warned last month that customers would start to see higher fares as a result of the soaring fuel costs. This week, United announced a new fee increase to help compensate for those costs, raising its checked baggage fee by $10 as a result of soaring energy costs.
“United is raising first and second checked bag fees by $10 for customers traveling in the U.S., Mexico and Canada and Latin America beginning with tickets purchased Friday, April 3,” United said via CNBC.
United’s new fee will be $45 to check a first bag on most domestic flights if the traveler pays ahead of time and $50 if they pay within 24 hours of their flight.
JetBlue
This week, JetBlue announced that it would be increasing its checked baggage fee by as much as $9.
For most domestic economy passengers, the first checked bag now costs $39, which is up from $35. During peak travel times such as April spring breaks, major holidays, and the summer, passengers will have to pay $49 instead of $40, the airline said.
“While we recognize that fee increases are never ideal, we take careful consideration to ensure these changes are implemented only when necessary,” JetBlue said via the Associated Press.
