We live in a time when much ado is made over the price of butter, which makes it all the more egregious that Costco was just forced to recall a lot of the dairy product for what many have called a very silly reason.
In details that were just made public by the Food and Drug Administration last week, the agency issued a recall of Kirkland Signature Sweet Cream Butter sold at Costco last month due to the fact that the packaging stated that the product “contains cream” but was specifically “missing the ‘Contains Milk’ statement.”
The recall was apparently needed lest anyone forget that cream is made from the top layer of fat skimmed from milk before homogenization.
A total of 79,200 pounds of butter was affected, including 32,400 pounds of salted butter and 46,800 pounds of unsalted butter.
According to details posted by the FDA, the butter had been distributed for sale in Texas. It was also listed as a Class II recall, which according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, refers to a “situation in which use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”
Of course, there are very good reasons we have allergy warnings on product packaging. But still, most people are likely aware that butter contains milk. As such, as news of the recall made its way online, many people couldn’t wrap their heads around it.
