Chilean Film ‘The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo’ Official US Trailer
by Alex Billington November 18, 2025Source: YouTube
“The rules in this house are set by me!” Altered Innocence has revealed their official trailer for the film The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo, a vibrant Chilean indie film which is the break out feature from the talented young director Diego Céspedes. It won the top prize in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, and it has also played at TIFF, AFI Fest & the Chicago Film Festival, among many others. Set in the year 1982 during the early days of the AIDS crisis in Chile. As an “unknown disease” begins to spread in a small mining town in the Chilean desert, gay men are accused of transmitting it through their eyes, only with their gaze. However in this charged environment, things aren’t exactly easy for 11-year-old Lidia, who’s being raised by a loving queer community led by Boa. She sets out in search of the truth. The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo recalls the emotional vibrancy of Almodóvar and continues Chile’s proud legacy of queer cinema—marking Céspedes as one of the most exciting new voices in world cinema. Starring Tamara Cortés as Lidia, Matías Catalán, Paula Dinamarca, Claudia Cabezas, and Luis Dubó. This has been getting great reviews at the fests, with critics calling it “a finely crafted, deeply affecting tribute to love and community––a piece of proudly, vitally queer art.” Definitely one to watch for.

Set in a remote Chilean mining town in 1982, Diego Céspedes’ dazzling debut feature follows young Lidia (starring Tamara Cortes), who grows up within a vibrant queer household led by drag performers and trans women. When a mysterious illness—rumored to spread through the gaze between men—sows fear and hysteria, the community becomes the target of suspicion and violence. Through Lidia’s eyes, Céspedes crafts a haunting allegory of love, myth, and prejudice that reimagines the early AIDS era as a queer western with poetic intimacy & desert-dry surrealism. The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo, also known as La Misteriosa Mirada del Flamenco in Spanish, is written and directed by the Chilean filmmaker Diego Céspedes, making his feature directorial debut after a few other shorts. Produced by Damien Megherbi, Giancarlo Nasi, Justin Pechberty. This initially premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, where it won the top prize in the Un Certain Regard section. Altered Innocence debuts The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo showing in select US theaters starting on December 12th, 2025 coming soon. Any good?
