Football great Brett Favre has opened up about family, revealing that he considers family more important than football and sharing that his dad did not say that he loved him much, so he was determined to do the opposite with his daughters, Brittany and Breleigh.
Favre made the comments last November in a lengthy interview with ESPN. When he was asked to “weigh” football and family, he came to a clear answer.
“Well, family is obviously the most important. There was a time when I thought football was the most important. Football will be over at some point, the family goes on,” Favre told ESPN.
Favre is back in the news because of a new Netflix documentary on his scandals called Untold: The Fall of Favre. It details accusations by a former New York Jets’ gameday host, Jenn Sterger, as well as a welfare scandal.
Favre’s family includes his wife Deanna; they met in high school and are still together. Brittany and Breleigh are their daughters together and their only kids.
To ESPN, Favre confessed, “I’m pretty boring, really. I consider myself more of a loner now.”

Favre pointed out that you can get over a loss on the football field, but not the loss of a family member.
“When you lose someone, or when there are setbacks, it kind of puts it in perspective. You can lose a game, but I see guys every week, including myself, you lose a game, it’s a tough loss, you’re down, two weeks later, you forgot about it,” Favre told ESPN.
“You know it’s amazing how down you were, but all of the sudden you’re like it never happened. But when you lose a family member or something tragic happens, that stays with you forever. You never get over it. Knowing that you have to deal with that for the rest of your life Football is important, but not as important as you once thought it was,” he told ESPN.
The documentary briefly discussed the loss of Favre’s father. Favre told Our American Stories that he parented his daughters differently than his father parented him.
Favre’s father, Irvin Favre, died in 2003 at age 58. “Irvin Favre had suffered a fatal heart attack in Mississippi, where Favre was born,” NFL.com reported. Favre played a “spectacular” football game the next day, telling NFL.com, “I knew that my dad would have wanted me to play. I love him so much, and I love this game.”

He said on the show that his dad “never told us he loved us,” explaining that, “I don’t think any drill sergeant at the end of the day says, ‘I really love you guys.’ He may say it in a joking manner… So my mom, of course, was kind of the caregiver.”
Favre added, “It was all tough, tough love.” He was determined if he had boys to “tell them I loved them as much as possible,” and now that he had two girls instead, “I tell them I love them.”

Brittany Favre is on Instagram, where she describes herself as a Catholic, wife, mom, bookworm, and artist.
In 2020, she shared a photo with her kids at Lambeau Field and wrote, “Quiet Lambeau is not the same, but I’m so happy these boys get to see where I grew up. I can’t wait for them to see it packed full of cheeseheads again 🥰”
Breleigh Favre was on the 2022 beach volleyball roster for Southern Miss. The page says she was majoring in biology. The documentary details how the welfare funds scandal involved the building of a volleyball stadium for Breleigh’s team.
