Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has admitted Frenkie de Jong suffered an injury issue in training, sparking fears of a setback for the Dutch midfielder.
De Jong went down with an ankle injury in April and only made his comeback earlier this month, playing a total of 24 minutes before October’s international break, for which he was not called up by the Netherlands to let him recover.
Ahead of Sunday’s visit from Sevilla, Flick confessed he was hoping to start De Jong before the Dutch midfielder had to limp out of training.
“He felt some discomfort, he started with the group but then he went to the sidelines,” Flick revealed. “I wanted to make him play as a starter, but we’ll see.”
AS state De Jong’s latest issue is not related to his ankle problem and is simply a minor muscle complaint which left many at the club fearful he would not even be able to make the squad against Sevilla.
The Dutchman was eventually included in Barcelona’s matchday squad, although just how healthy he is remains to be seen.
Barcelona also confirmed the long-awaited return of Gavi, 348 days after his horror knee injury with Spain in November 2023. He has been included in the matchday squad alongside Fermin Lopez, Dani Olmo and Lamine Yamal.

It seems that the injury bug has bitten Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong once again. The Dutch midfielder, who recently made his comeback after an ankle injury, suffered an injury issue in training that has put his playing status in doubt.
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick expressed his disappointment at the situation, revealing that De Jong started with the group but then had to leave the training session due to discomfort. Flick had been hoping to start De Jong in the upcoming match against Sevilla, but now the midfielder’s availability is uncertain.
The good news for Barcelona fans is that De Jong’s latest issue is said to be a minor muscle complaint, unrelated to his previous ankle problem. Despite initial concerns that he might not even make the matchday squad, De Jong was eventually included, although his fitness levels remain a question mark.
In addition to the news about De Jong, Barcelona also welcomed back young talent Gavi after a lengthy absence due to a knee injury suffered while on international duty with Spain. Gavi’s return will surely provide a boost to the team, as they look to maintain their strong start to the season.

The resilience and determination shown by these athletes in the face of adversity is truly inspiring. Let’s hope for a speedy recovery for De Jong and a successful return to action for both him and Barcelona.
