Atari, the legendary game publisher, has made a triumphant return with its latest augmented version of a classic video game. This time, they have brought the 1976 classic Breakout to Coinbase’s Ethereum layer-2 network Base, creating an exciting new gaming experience for players.
As part of Base’s “OnChain Summer” event, players now have the opportunity to compete against each other for a top spot on the Atari Breakout leaderboard. Those with the highest scores will be eligible to win exciting weekly prizes, including a retro 2600+ game console, gift cards, and more.
The partnership between Atari and Base was first announced in July, with the release of the blockchain-based version of their iconic Asteroids video game. In Asteroids, players navigate a simple spaceship and destroy asteroids to advance in the game.
Breakout, originally designed by Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell and Steve Wozniak, requires players to use a paddle and ball to break through brick walls. The latest release of the game offers different modes such as Degen, Bitcoin, and Higher, allowing players to earn double points for a limited time by shooting special bricks.
To participate in the Atari Breakout game, players need to connect their Coinbase, MetaMask, Rainbow, or WalletConnect wallets to play and mint a Breakout NFT for 0.0015 ETH, which is approximately $3.60. The proceeds from the NFT minting will be distributed to the developers and artists responsible for creating the game, as confirmed by Base.
Tyler Drewitz, director at Atari, shared during a Base Twitter stream in July, “All scores are logged on-chain, and from there, it gets pretty fun. There’s a weekly leaderboard, and we have an overall leaderboard with some pretty big prizes.”
In conclusion, the collaboration between Atari and Base has brought the classic Breakout game to a new level by incorporating blockchain technology and offering players the chance to win exciting prizes. The introduction of NFTs adds a unique element to the gaming experience, allowing players to mint digital assets while enjoying a nostalgic game. With Atari’s rich history in the gaming industry and Base’s innovative approach to blockchain gaming, the future looks promising for both companies and gaming enthusiasts alike.
