Abraham Quintanilla, the father of late Tejano music legend Selena, has died. He was 86.
The patriarch, who managed Selena’s music career and produced multiple onscreen projects about her life over the years, died on Saturday morning, according to a social media post shared by his son Abraham Quintanilla III.
“It’s with a heavy heart to let you guys know that my Dad passed away today…” he wrote Saturday on Instagram.
Born Feb. 22, 1939 in Corpus Christi, Texas, Abraham II was a musician who started in the singing group Los Dinos in 1956, before retiring from music in the late ’60s to start a family with wife Marcella. Upon realizing his daughter Selena’s vocal talents, he came out of retirement to nurture her musical career.
Following Selena’s 1995 death at age 23, when she was infamously shot by Yolanda Saldívar, Abraham served as an executive producer on the ’97 biopic Selena, which starred Jennifer Lopez as his daughter and featured Edward James Olmos portraying him.
Abraham more recently helped develop Netflix’s Selena: The Series, which ran for two seasons from 2020 to 2021, as well as the streamer’s recent documentary Selena y Los Dinos, which became available to stream last month.
