Although virtual reality technologies have significantly advanced, they still fall short of fully immersing users in digital worlds. One major limitation is the inability to simulate sensations like touch. However, a newly developed device by scientists appears to offer a solution to this problem.

Researchers from Northwestern University in the USA have created a haptic wearable device that can simulate the sense of touch. While most earlier devices were limited to simple vibrations, this one promises much more. The research findings have been published in Science.

As you can see in the image, the device is worn on the hand. This wireless device can simulate various types of touch sensations such as vibrations, stretching, pressure, friction, and bending. Additionally, the researchers noted that the device can operate at different speeds — faster or slower — to deliver a more realistic sensory experience, depending on the current interaction.

The device is composed of a small magnet and a series of coil wires. As electricity flows through the coils, a magnetic field is generated, producing a strong force that moves the magnet as needed. One of the most striking features is its Bluetooth connectivity. Users will be able to connect the device to their smartphones or VR headsets, offering a much more immersive virtual reality experience.

Furthermore, it has been suggested that the device could be beneficial for individuals with visual or hearing impairments. According to the researchers, possible applications include allowing people to feel different textures during online shopping, or enabling those with hearing impairments to “feel” music.

The device, which aims to bridge the gap between the digital and physical worlds, is still in development. We will have to wait and see whether it will actually be released for public use.
