Laser-assisted surgeries have been one of the leading methods in the field of eye health for many years. Scientists are now working on a new method that aims to correct vision defects with a different and less invasive approach.

One of the most preferred methods for those who want to get rid of glasses is LASIK eye surgery. But this operation is not suitable for everyone because tissue is removed from the cornea. Now, researchers are trying something brand new: a method with no laser and no incision that can correct vision defects in just one minute.

This new method, announced at the American Chemical Society meeting, is called “Electromechanical Remodeling” or EMR. The logic is actually quite simple: a low-voltage electric current is applied to the eye, and the cornea is reshaped with a special platinum-coated lens. During this process, the cornea temporarily softens, takes the shape of the mold, and then hardens again, retaining its new form.

A promising method for people with thin corneas

Initial trials were conducted on rabbit eyes, and successful results were obtained in these tests simulating myopia. The most remarkable aspect of the method is that, unlike LASIK, no tissue is removed from the cornea; the existing tissue is simply reshaped. This is a significant advantage, especially for people with thin corneas. Moreover, EMR is not limited to correcting vision impairments; it is also seen as a promising option for the treatment of corneal clouding caused by chemical substances.

For now, this method has only been tested in a laboratory setting. There is still a long way to go before it can be applied to humans. First, initial experiments will be conducted, followed by FDA approval and clinical trials. Furthermore, the financing for the research is still uncertain. Nevertheless, experts believe that this method could become a viable treatment option within the next 10 years.
