NASA and Technion’s FLUTE project aims to revolutionize the search for habitable planets by building 50-meter diameter telescopes with liquid mirrors in space.

To look deep into space, we must build larger telescopes. However, this size pushes the limits of current technology. Even the James Webb Space Telescope’s 6.5-meter mirror is at the edge of what can be transported by rocket. But what if a telescope mirror were made of liquid instead of glass?

NASA and Technion University’s joint project, FLUTE (Fluidic Telescope), is built precisely on this idea. The core of the project lies in the ability of liquids to naturally form perfect spherical shapes due to surface tension in a micro-gravity environment. This provides an ideal structure for a telescope mirror.

What if Mirrors Were Liquid Instead of Glass?

The FLUTE concept envisions a 50-meter diameter telescope mirror made of liquid. This is wider than a football field and almost eight times larger than the James Webb’s mirror. However, there were serious questions about the functionality of such a liquid mirror. Specifically, it was uncertain how the liquid surface would be affected when the telescope rotated to point at different celestial objects.

Addressing this problem, scientists studied the behavior of these mirrors through theoretical modeling and laboratory experiments. According to their analyses, although the liquid mirror deforms at the micrometer level during rotation, these deformations reach the center of the mirror very slowly. Even with daily maneuvers for 10 years, the inner 80% of the mirror maintains high optical quality.

Tested with Experiments

The research also reveals that such telescopes must operate with a “maneuver budget.” This means the total amount of reorientation the telescope can perform will be limited. Interestingly, the study showed that small, multi-directional maneuvers yielded better results than large, single movements. This is because small maneuvers create less symmetrical distortion patterns, and these patterns are more amenable to optical correction.

To validate these theoretical predictions, researchers conducted laboratory experiments by creating controlled distortions on liquid films using contactless electromagnetic forces. Although the experimental setup was much smaller than the scale of a telescope, the data obtained proved that the developed mathematical model could accurately predict the liquid dynamics.

Next-Generation Telescopes Can Self-Repair

One of the most striking aspects of the research is that liquid mirrors not only pave the way for larger but also more flexible telescopes. These mirrors can reshape themselves according to the observation task, correct optical errors, and even “self-repair” after micrometeoroid impacts.

Although the theoretical foundation is solid, transporting and controlling liquid in space still poses significant engineering challenges. However, this study shows that such telescopes could operate for decades and even be reshaped from scratch. For the next generation of space telescopes planned for launch in the 2030s and beyond, FLUTE could herald a transition from traditional glass craftsmanship to designs based on fluid physics.
