Stock Market Today: The Indian stock market witnessed a recovery over the past week, with the total market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies surging by 3.71 per cent. This market recovery has resulted in a wealth recoup of Rs 14.27 lakh crore for investors.

According to provisional data from the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the total market capitalisation of listed firms jumped from Rs 384.01 lakh crore to Rs 398.29 lakh crore within a five-day market session from March 3-7. 

Markets log first weekly gain

Indian equity markets ended a on a flat note on Friday but managed to log their first weekly gain in three weeks. The Nifty 50 inched up 0.03 per cent to close at 22,550, while the Sensex slipped 0.08 per cent. However, both indices gained 1.88 per cent and 1.66 per cent for the week, respectively.

Smallcaps outperform as midcaps lag

While large-cap indices saw muted movement, the broader market showed mixed trends. The Nifty Smallcap 100 surged 0.67 per cent, marking its fourth consecutive session in the green, while the Nifty Midcap 100 declined 0.32 per cent. Despite the day’s performance, both indices recorded strong weekly gains of up to 5.50 per cent.

IT stocks under pressure as global cues weigh

Concerns over a slowdown in the US economy triggered selling in IT stocks, dragging the Nifty IT index down 1 per cent. However, oil & gas and metal stocks found support, benefiting from easing crude oil prices and a weaker US dollar.

Trade war fears keep investors on edge

The week was marked by fresh tensions in the global trade landscape. US President Donald Trump imposed a 25 per cent tariff on Canada and Mexico, with some temporary exemptions under the USMCA agreement until April 2. However, these exceptions did not apply to tariffs on China, leading to retaliatory measures from China and Canada.
