PRESS RELEASE – The German municipality of Hofbieber is partnering with Hexagon’s Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial division to develop an urban digital twin aimed at monitoring the town’s journey towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.
This innovative digital twin utilizes environmental data to create a virtual replica of the physical municipality, offering 3D simulations that cover various aspects such as C02 emissions, heat distribution, and potential flooding risks.
While digital twins are predominantly utilized by larger cities for environmental modeling and urban planning, the leadership of Hofbieber, a town with a population of 6,300 located 100 kilometers northeast of Frankfurt, is determined to lead by example and demonstrate how small towns can combat climate change.
Aside from working towards climate targets, Hofbieber stands to benefit from increased property values, reduced insurance premiums, and boosted economic development and tourism, all thanks to the environmental and urban management opportunities facilitated by digital twin technology.
“The goal of the municipality of Hofbieber is to achieve climate neutrality by 2030, and the digital twin serves as a crucial component in preparing the town for the future,” remarked Mayor Markus Röder.
Through the use of the digital twin to monitor its CO2 emissions, Hofbieber can effectively gauge its progress and compare it with that of other municipalities. Furthermore, the digital twin can be programmed to simulate various scenarios such as flooding risks, heat islands, wind patterns, traffic flow, and more for the municipality’s benefit.
Hexagon has previously developed digital twins for larger cities like Klagenfurt and Villach in Austria, as well as Kanton Zug in Switzerland. However, due to its smaller size (87 square kilometers), Hofbieber presented a unique opportunity to create a digital twin using aerial images obtained from drone flights, rather than traditional aerial photography.

The digital twin project is a collaborative effort with KC Becker, one of Hexagon’s local partners specializing in municipality projects. Hofbieber has a history of using Hexagon’s GeoMedia Smart Client solution for mapping and geographic information systems workflows.
