“An isolated mansion, a mysterious locked room, creepy corridors, a dusty cellar, a mad doctor.” Hammer Films has revealed another new official trailer for an indie horror creation called Doctor Jekyll, starring Eddie Izzard as Jekyll. This first premiered at last year’s FrightFest horror festival in London, and it’ll be out to watch in the US (also on VOD) early in August in just a few weeks. Hammer Films invites you to view Doctor Jekyll, a “modern re-imagining” of the classic tale from the 1886 novella starring Eddie Izzard as a Dr. Nina this time around – a pharma maven plagued by her demons. Directed by Joe Stephenson, Doctor Jekyll is a slow-burn gothic horror that delves into themes of duality, concocting a surprising mix of dark humor and flashes of camp all within a twisted fairytale. This also stars Scott Chambers, Simon Callow, Lindsay Duncan, Jonathan Hyde, Morgan Watkins, Robyn Cara, Isabella Inchbald, and Tony Jayawardena. “Izzard in a role like you’ve never seen before. A fresh, horror-filled take on a timeless tale, this adaptation promises to send shivers down your spine.” It seems like a proper intense horror experience.
Here’s the two official trailers (+ poster) for Joe Stephenson’s film Doctor Jekyll, direct from YouTube:
Dr. Nina Jekyll (Eddie Izzard) made herself a fortune in the pharmaceutical industry, rubbing shoulders with the elite and becoming a household name. But her success came at a cost, and after scandal forced her out of the spotlight she now lives in seclusion with her demons… In need of an assistant, Jekyll hires Rob – an ex-con straight out of rehab, trying to get back on his feet. However, it soon becomes clear that there are evil forces at play, and Rob’s wits are tested in a game of cat and mouse with a mysterious and manipulative entity. Doctor Jekyll is directed by British filmmaker Joe Stephenson, director of the films Chicken and Agatha and the Midnight Murders, and the doc film McKellen: Playing the Part previously, plus episodes of the series “Ackley Bridge” most recently. The screenplay is written by Dan Kelly-Mulhern, adapted from Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 classic novella. It’s produced by Liam Coutts, Guy de Beaujeu, and Joe Stephenson. This initially premiered at FrightFest 2023 in the UK last year. Hammer will release Izzard’s Doctor Jekyll film in select US theaters + on VOD starting August 2nd, 2024. Anyone into this?
