While we strive to maintain objectivity in our reviews of financial products, it’s no secret that we are big fans of Seeking Alpha here at WallStreetSurvivor.

Personally, I was an early subscriber to their Premium service and one of the first to sign up for their Alpha Picks stock recommendation service when it launched in July of 2022.

In many of our blogs here on WallStreetSurvivor, we discuss Seeking Alpha’s Quant Rating system. In this Seeking Alpha Quant Rating Review, we will delve deep into the publicly available information on this topic. We have also had discussions with members of the Seeking Alpha performance teams to gain insights that we will share.

This review will provide the hard facts about the Quant Rating system and explore its accuracy as a tool to help investors increase their profits in the stock market. Additionally, we will compare its performance against other popular stock rating systems in the same price range.

Whether you are seeking stock recommendations based on Seeking Alpha’s Quant Ratings or looking to assess your stock portfolio using their Quant Ratings, this guide will assist you in determining if the Seeking Alpha Quant Rating is a valuable tool for you.

Overview of Seeking Alpha Quant Ratings

Of all the tools available on Seeking Alpha, I find their Quant Rating to be the most crucial. This is why:

First, I have linked my Etrade account to my Seeking Alpha Premium account and only invest in stocks listed as Strong Buy by their Quant Rating, and I sell stocks when their Quant Rating signals me to do so. This strategy has significantly outperformed the market for me. To learn more about Seeking Alpha Premium, you can read our Seeking Alpha Premium Review.

Second, researchers at the University of Kentucky published a paper concluding that Seeking Alpha’s Quant Ratings “strongly predict” future stock returns and offer “pronounced benefits” to investors.

Third, consider the results of Seeking Alpha’s Alpha Picks since its launch in 2022:

Since its inception, Alpha Picks has outperformed the market by over 40%, with many stocks doubling or more, and an accuracy rate of 78%.

In this overview of Seeking Alpha Quant Ratings, we will address important questions:

  • What is a Quant Rating?
  • How does it work?
  • How can investors use it?
  • What sets it apart from traditional rating systems?

Seeking Alpha describes their Quant Rating as:

Seeking Alpha’s Quant Ratings are an objective, unemotional evaluation of each stock based on data, such as the company’s financial statements, the stock’s price performance, and analysts’ estimates of the company’s future revenue and earnings. Over 100 metrics for each stock are compared to the same metrics for the other stocks in its sector. The stock is then assigned a rating (Strong Buy, Buy, Hold, Sell, or Strong Sell), and a score (from 1.0 to 5.0, where 1.0 is Strong Sell and 5.0 is Strong Buy). Seeking Alpha grades each stock by five “factors” — Value, Growth, Profitability, Momentum, and EPS Revisions. To do this, we compare the relevant metrics for the factor in question for the stock to the same metrics for the other stocks in its sector. The factor is then assigned a grade, from A+ to F.

They calculate this Quant Rating for about 6,000 stocks daily and update it each morning on their website.

Their site is user-friendly. When I log in to Seeking Alpha with my Premium subscription and check a quote on Apple, as of October 11, 2024, I see that Apple has a Quant Rating of HOLD. If you are a free member, you won’t see this.

Also, the number of people following Apple on the Seeking Alpha platform is shown at the top-right, giving you an idea of the user base.

Using the Quant Rating is straightforward. Backtesting has shown that stocks with a Strong Buy rating outperform the market, and stocks with a Strong Sell rating underperform. This sets it apart from other rating systems by being proactive in changing ratings to avoid losses.

You can link your brokerage account to Seeking Alpha, making it easy to monitor ratings on your stocks and receive alerts when ratings change, simplifying portfolio management and guiding you on buying and selling decisions.

Performance of Quant Rating

Let’s address the most critical question: does the Quant Rating help you make more money in the stock market?

An evident indicator of the Quant Rating’s performance is the comparison of Seeking Alpha’s Alpha Picks stock recommendation service against competitors over the past three years.

Best performing stock newsletters as of September 29, 2024

Another way to evaluate the validity of stock recommendations is by backtesting the performance of the Quant Rating, which is key to the accuracy and success of the system.

Backtesting Performance and Historical Accuracy

The backtesting performance of the Quant Ratings is illustrated in the following charts:

Seeking Alpha Performance Chart Backtested 26 October 2024

Strong Buy stocks show an average return of 26% and outperform the S&P 500 by almost 5 times when backtested to 2010, showcasing the Quant Rating’s effectiveness.

The performance of stocks with a Strong Sell rating is depicted in this chart:

Seeking Alpha Quant Ratings Sell backtested October 2024

It is crucial to steer clear of Strong Sell stocks, as they have historically underperformed the market significantly.

Factors like stock size don’t matter; if a stock is one of the 6,000 rated by Seeking Alpha, the Quant Rating is effective. Strong Buy stocks tend to outperform the market while Strong Sell stocks tend to underperform it.

Key Metrics of Quant Rating Performance

As I mentioned at the outset, I subscribe to both Premium and Alpha Picks at Seeking Alpha and rely on their Quant Ratings weekly. The accuracy of their buy and sell ratings, along with the success of their Alpha Picks service, instill my trust in their Quant Ratings.

The metrics for evaluating Quant Rating performance include its performance compared to the S&P 500, the accuracy of its recommendations, and the volatility of the recommended stocks.

As depicted in the chart provided earlier, Seeking Alpha consistently picks winning stocks, with over 75% accuracy each year. The volatility of their recommendations is also displayed, with their worst-performing stock down less than 50%.

Reasons for Quant Rating Success

The success of Seeking Alpha’s Quant Rating system can be attributed to their analysis of over 100 data points per stock, comparing them against others in the sector. This comprehensive approach to evaluating stocks sets them apart.

Acquiring CressCap Investment Research in 2018, Seeking Alpha integrated cutting-edge quant analytics into their system, leveraging the expertise of Steven Cress, a veteran in the field with over 30 years of stock analysis experience.

Quant Rating vs. Analyst Ratings

Traditional stock valuation methods previously relied on fundamental analysis, while the modern approach is increasingly quantitative, focusing on numbers and data rather than subjective assessments. In the battle between Quant Rating and Analyst Ratings, the quantitative analysis approach appears to be leading the way.

How Will Seeking Alpha Quant Rating Improve Your Investment Strategy?

Seeking Alpha’s Quant Rating has significantly outperformed the market since its inception, aiding investors in making informed decisions. Personally, linking my Etrade account to my Seeking Alpha Premium account has simplified monitoring stocks’ Quant Ratings and enhanced my overall performance, alleviating investing stress.

Incorporating recommended stocks from Alpha Picks encourages consistent monthly investments, key to building personal wealth.

Is the Seeking Alpha Quant Rating Worth It?

If you are still questioning the value of the Quant Rating Premium, consider the evidence presented above. It is evident that Strong Buy-rated stocks outperform the market while Strong Sell-rated stocks underperform, making the guidance provided by the Quant Rating worth the investment.
